Record of meeting 24 August 2011

Present: Terry, Leonie, Geoff, Mandy, Wendy, Helene, Robyn, David C, Melissa and welcome to Gary


News: David C went to Wellington to see his new great grand daughter Ruby Blu. Helene has a new washing machine. Wendy is getting ready for a trip with her car club. Mandy has arranged for Michael to demonstrate how to record our own talking books. New member Gary is happy to be here, he had back surgery in July and is slowly recovering and walked about 100 yards for the first time, his sister has encouraged him to get out and attend our meeting. Geoff was interested in an article on world trade and protectionism. Leonie is happy and now has walls on her new house. Terry’s daughter is on medication for the next three months and then has another MRI. Robyn had an interesting Saturday went to State Archives Centre in Sydney, found the will of her husbands great, great grandfather and other family members. Melissa turned 40 yesterday and had a great day and had the song she wrote “I know a place” about Jervis Bay and sung by her husband Scott, broadcast on community radio 99.7 and you can ring the request number 4443 9644 to request Melissa’s song “I know a place”.

Reading of homework - strange characters
Mandy – friends you pull off and on like socks, Camilla Double-Barrell surname the most fussy hostess. Wendy the in laws. Helene neighbours and fences. Melissa the strange person in the mirror. David C a one eyed friend. Terry with his strangest friend on a wild mini ride. Leonie read the story of Darren a man living alone and feeling like he is from another planet. Gary feels literacy is important – you can’t have democracy if you can’t read. Gary also told of his experience of feeling helpless when not being able to read the written language in foreign countries. Geoff bought info about his family tree and talked about it.


Exercise
We worked to find the largest number of words from the letters in the words – writing and holiday. A fun exercise and a good test of word knowledge thanks to Leonie.


Quick write - Destiny
Melissa found destiny is swirling around us. Helene’s Destiny a game player, Wendy wrote about Destiny the stripper, Many saw destiny as a destination, Leonie found a new partner at a personal growth group. Terry asked “Why are we here?” While David C asked “Is this it?” Great stories everyone.

News of the Week
Jo attended the Community Forum to try and elicit support for some issues. 
Terry has become reacquainted with an old friend who is also a writer and they have been swapping stories and he was really impressed with the quality of his friends writing and they are encouraging each other.
Leonie has nothing much happening.
Geoff has not too well with a middle ear infection so we promised not shout at him.
Melissa will have a song she has recorded played on the radio next Tuesday morning
Mandy has now sold 10 books on Smashwords.
Wendy. Told us she found Real Ins. was the cheapest for house and contents insurance.
Robyn’s husband Joe is not well and they might not be able to go on their cruise. Robyn is not happy about his health.
Helene drove back from Canberra this morning (how dedicated) she is always going back and forth.
Dave was pleased to find a tape of a song he had recorded years ago. Still hasn't sold his hundreds of pottys. We wonder why he collected them?

Leonie - Redolent means fragrant strong smell or strongly reminiscent
Geoff – is looking for another word for accountable, he is fed up with politicians using it - we suggested liable.
Mandy – Mephistophelian meaning Devil like looking.
Wendy –Stuffication - New word means to be overwhelmed by all the stuff you have accumulated.
Wendy - Intexticated -distracted by texting and coffice. using a cafe as an office.
Robyn – Oblation - Anything offered in divine worship.
Helene - Ado - trouble
Dave - Pica - means black letter also can mean eating rubbish such as dirt and sand
Jo - Spongy with an e or without - soft and absorbent
Demagogue - Someone who stirs up the people by stirring up their emotions and feelings. The chief aim of a demagogue is money and power.

Record of meeting 10 August 2011

In attendance: Wendy, David R, David C, Jo, Robyn, Terry, Geoff, Helene, Di and welcome to Jacinta our newest and youngest member.


News: Wendy is disturbed about what is happening in the UK at present. Jacinta our newest member is studying Media, Advertising and English Literature at the Uni of Wollongong. Geoff wrote a poem about a friend who died six months ago. Helene drove back from Canberra this morning after attending the Wakakirri in Canberra last night. Terry’s daughter’s brain tumour is likely to be benign. Robyn cholesterol level is good but blood sugar is a bit high and is in good health. Jo talked about Mad Joe McCafferty a murderer who blamed his behaviour on his wife for killing their baby. David C has just become a great grandfather of Ruby Blue. David R drove all the way from Sydney this morning to attend the meeting after seeing Jersey Boys at the Royal Theatre and other activities in Sydney. Di has not been busy for the past week.


Word of the day: Wendy anarchy – a state of lawlessness and sedition an action or rebellion against the government. Di Quisling – a traitor who co operates with the occupying enemy. Helene benevolence well-wishing friendliness or concern for the needs and desires of others. Geoff – traduce means slander, defame. Terry axiom – a statement to be taken to be true without proof. Robyn - Colportage meaning distribution of publications from the French to carry. Jo shuntle brilliance of a diamond ring or a sexual term and louche a facial expression dubious shady and disreputable. David C fortitude meaning strength and countenance appearance especially of the face. David R bearing has eight different meanings standing, relevance, level of tolerance, a structural point, direction or position, a device or charge.

Exercise
As a group we developed two characters listed below.


Unnamed 55 year old male, has slight limp in right leg, charismatic gentleman, balding red hair, photographer, has nerves, alcohol problems, who is highly uncoordinated in his dressing, wears nylon stockings, owns a BSA motor bike and side car, wears a flying helmet and goggles, he reads, has a strong accent, he is short, wears a skull ring on right finger and has a short fuse.


Irene - Female 49 years old, has a wig, green eyes, is an artist, not assertive, wears little or not make up, likes to wear suits, has a squint in her left eye which is more obvious when stressed, speaks in a deep voice, occupation photo colourist, she has children, she has a secret love, she has a burn on her left arm, very tall, laughs a lot, she is maternal and has trouble sleeping


Homework – you are driving along a country road and see a decrepit old house write the story of who built it and why it stands empty using the characters listed in the exercise above.

NEWS OF THE WEEK


Geoff spoke of the Australian Literary Review (ALR) which he passed around the group. The ALR is included free MONTHLY, within 'The Australian', each FIRST Wednesday of the month.
Leonie. Her house is in the process of being built. Today there were 8 workmen there ready to work, she said this as if it was a miracle.
Terry. His daughter has been diagnosed with a brain tumour and as yet the family don't know how serious it is. We all offered our support and prayers for him, it is a worrying time for his family. May God keep you all.
Jo. She has got her car fixed it is known as the bomb and is now registered and it is going okay.
David R. Went Whale watching on the extreme whale watching and thoroughly enjoyed it. He got really close to three whales. It cost him $52 and lasted two and a half hours. Good value for money he said.
Di. Missed us all very much as she has been away and missed not writing as she has been so busy. Her partner has moved down from Kangaroo Valley and is now living with her. She is in a state of Bliss.
Wendy. Nothing she can think of. Every day is wonderful.
Mandy. Proudly boasted about her grandson and is going to see him as he is having an engagement party. Grandchildren are just as wonderful as children once they grow up.
Helene. New induction cook top has now taken up residence in her kitchen and she says it is wonderful. Her family will expect sumptuous meals now.
Cheryl New to the group this week and has only lived in the area for a month and is enjoying some me time. She wants to be involved with things and loves writing inspirational and spiritual things to uplift people..


WORD OF THE DAY


Helene. Besotted. Adj and means infatuated or stupefied, the mind.The mind can become besotted with drink. Second word. Bliss means perfect happiness.
Mandy told us about an expression To Sit on Ones Hands. Taking no action not applauding. Another expression. Kitchen Sink Drama. A play about ordinary people their lives and dramas.
Wendy. Absquatulate To leave in a hurry. Second word. Ego Surfing. Looking on the net for details about yourself.
Di. Mucilaginous. Slimy and ropey.
David R. Trenchant. Adj meaning vigorous or incisive. From and old French word meaning cutting. In poetry terms it can mean a sharp tool. Has several meanings.
Jo. Go on sweetheart. used as a caption on tv and it came out Go ensuite hurt. Her other word was Lush. Often used by Americans to describe someone who drinks.
Grogram A cloak. It became a term used for alcohol Grog as the man who served the drink wore a Grogram Cloak.
Terry. Miss spelling of the word enclosed on a school they used inclose. Fractious hard to manage or unruly.
Leonie. Extirpate meaning to destroy and annihilate means to destroy completely.
Geoff. Salience Something that stands out from the things around it. and last but not least. Benignity mellow harmless not life threatening.


HOMEWORK STORIES READ OUT

Leonie. The Topic was Dinner Time. A really good description of dinner time in a nursing home. It was very well written and brought it all very clearly to ones mind.
Geoff. Dinner time. The perfect meal portrayed in a family and how it was depicted in the fifties.
Cheryl. My Favourite Sunset. A lovely piece about the ending of the day.
Helene. The House of Love. A poem. Taken from the houses perspective.
Mandy. Dinner Time about dinner time in a Concentration Camp.
Wendy. Eating. A poem about how much she hates dinner time.
Di. The House on the Hill. A visit to a loved Uncle with explicit descriptions. of times gone by.
David R. The House on the hill. A poem.about wrecking kids and ex wives.
Jo. A House on the Hill. The story of the love for a tree beside the house.
Terry. A six words story. Several examples of stories reduced to six words.


Exercises


We all had a go at doing a six word story. Some good ideas. Much laughter as we guessed which poem story or film the six words described. We then played letters making as long a word as possible from vowels and continuants pulled out of a bag. Wendy won this game.


Geoff read us an exert from the novel he is writing. It is coming along nicely. His descriptions are not only mind pictures you can even smell the scene.


Homework


Write about the adventures of Middle Aged Man in Lycra (MAMIL).


We hope Cheryl enjoyed our company and we certainly enjoyed hers, she fitted in very well so we hope to see her next week

2 pm Thursday 4 August 201 afternoon tea at Mandys 50 Ridgelands Drive Sanctuary Point. Mandy has no car so it has to be at her place instead of Helene’s. All welcome. A small plate of food to share and donations to Cancer Council would be appreciated. Official receipt will be issued.

Record of meeting 27 July 2011

Present: Geoff, Robyn, Jo, David C, David R, Wendy, Mandy, Helene, Leonie and Lyn.


News: Discussion on the men’s shed. Geoff has finished one section of his four part novel. Robyn had visitors from Merimbula. Jo had her car fixed and registered. Jo plans to go to Pyree to research her genealogy. David C had his PSA checked and everything is good. He also said that the Health Care Plan will be withdrawn in October 2011. David R had a cortisone injection and is now pain free. Wendy found king parrots, galahs, currawongs and lorikeets in her yard after the rain. Leonie went to Bairnsdale last week and finalised the sale of her house and went to her old writing group.


Words of the day: Leonie somnambulant = sleep walking, somnolent sleepy drowsy state between awake and sleeping. Geoff MAMIL = middle aged men in Lycra. Robyn touché = comes from the verb "Toucher" in French meaning To Touch. So "Touché" is the action of touching. Or alternatively, "TOUCHE", with an accent on the "e" also means "you got me on that one" as a convincing argument in a conversation. Jo svelte = slender in figure, lithe. Virgule = forward slash. David C triumvirate = group of three people who are in control. David R – antisappointment = yearn then left down. Ambivalent = mixed feelings or contradictory ideas, unsure, love and hate together. Wendy erubescent = to blush or become red in the face. Helene = alopecia hair loss.


Reading of homework: David C meeting the boss at the beach. Jo orange juice and a bikini at work can’t work anywhere else not enough drama too quiet. Robyn bath soap and a headache. Leonie flies to Queensland to escape an annoying boss. Helene dreams of removing the ugly mean boss. Mandy the boss of the dogs diet and games at the beach. Wendy revenge of the mother. David R squirmy wormy bikini wearing CEO.


Exercise: We used the words of the day to write a short story or poem. We wrote about rivers of water, the Mamil culture, view from the triumvirate of alopecia.


Quick write - describe a view that has stuck in your mind, house or favourite eating or drinking place.
David C gave us the Cambewarra view. Jo wrote about an old house inhabited by termites, cockroaches, goanna, frogs, ticks, horse and a rabbit. Robyn a view with hang gliding the thermals. Geoff described a small mountain near Mount Fuji and a tough walk to see the pink sunrise. Leonie falls to her knees and sees God in blue trees. Helene visits a gift shop. Mandy described pristine view of the beach, boats and dolphins in paradise. Wendy made us hungry with a fish and chip shop. David R described dawn at Orin beach.


Homework: Write about The house on the hill or Trees that fall in the night or Dinner time or It’s not that I don’t trust you.

Record of meeting 20 July 2011

Present: David R, Jo, David C, Geoff, Helene, Mandy, Wendy


News: David R apologised for the things he has said that upset some people in the group and will make an effort not to do so again. Jo is thinking about the number of times she has almost been killed. Jo’s son Danny has vacuumed up all her spiders. David C is learning to play the ukulele because his fingers are too short to play a guitar. David C is has advertised his chamber pots on E Bay as a collection – anyone interested. Geoff talked about M J Hyland and how she cultivates the reader. Helene drove from Canberra this morning to attend the meeting. Mandy has bought a mobile phone and is learning how to use it for emergencies but will not give out her number. Mandy recently put her sixth book called “Missouri” on Smashwords. Wendy talked about an article in Rugby League week about Kim Williams her son who is a coach of coaches.


Word of the day: Mandy followmelad – ribbons worn on the back of a hat indicating a woman is single. Wendy – let the cat out of the bag – came from the practice of substituting a cat for a pig. David R – cash-cow – a business investment or product that produces an easy profit. Jo – forebear and forbear to abstain from, to restrain oneself, be patient and an ancestor. David C – coetaneous - of a similar age. Geoff – schadenfreude - dark friend. Helene shared a thought for the day “The one cause of stress is the belief that my life is not going the way I want”.


Homework reading: David C – time traveller thought mental communication and a robotic nurse. Jo – wish hard enough and you will get it, life in a white laminated world. David R read “Seduced” a poem and “the great escape” a poem about a prisoner who escapes with hairspray. Wendy read her poem on the pleasures of living in a retirement home. Mandy a monologue Doris Day funny questions and answers about being old and repeating yourself, repeating yourself.


Exercise: We wrote progressive poetry and progressive stories which included ostriches, bears, crocodiles and buttons and bows.

Quick write: The scream echoed over the ocean stories included the characters Hortence, the Lock Ness Monster, seagulls, dolphins, a bull shark, a lost daughter and murder in the dark.


Homework: Write a story using the words an annoying boss, bikini and fake illness.

Record of meeting

Present: Cath, Terry, Robyn, Geoff, Helene, Mandy, Wendy, David C, Jo, David R.


News: Helene - had a mystery message on Facebook from Kooka Burra wanting to join the writing group. Mandy took the church service last week and people laughed - not sure if people are supposed to laugh. Wendy – nothing exciting. David C – lots have happened and saw a whale at Collingwood Beach and found a book of sayings by Bryce Courtney. Jo got electrocuted using a lamp at home last week. Cath has been away driving for 3 weeks, Bathurst, Oberon, Goulburn etc. Terry saw Jennifer Byrne on fantasy stories last night which stimulated his thinking on writing. Robyn is getting ready for her cruise and working out how to pay for it. David R has been up in the Blue Mountains and has been researching the writer Edgar Allan Poe and read out a poem he wrote about him and the poem “The Raven”.


Word of the day: Geoff – egregious – extremely bad flagrant – redolent – reminiscent or smelling strongly. Mandy - Egalitarian - equality of all people. Wendy – The chiropractor had a chauffeur who played chess and sang in the choir – a sentence showing the use of different pronununciations of “ch”. Swashbuckler – a flamboyant swordsman. David C - incunabula - swaddling clothes, birth place or cradle and a book printed before 1500. Jo maniac – maniacal. Dolphins and porpoises are different. Cath - abstruse – hard to understand. Terry - nebulous – indistinct, hazy. Also discussed the word prestige. David C - surcease – cessation or relief.


Homework readings; Geoff brought a cutting about M J Hyland as he was inspired by her ability to encourage him to read her depressing story. Helene read a poem about wanting to live in a haunted house. Mandy read her short story of Asher a young girl sole survivor of a ship wreck. David C wrote an indigenous story. Terry (never without homework) read out an article about how Nicole Krauss starts writing and read the story of Cloud and a smart talking ghost. Robyn wrote the story of Donna who moves into a haunted house. David R read a poem of Miranda where the sun turned off.

Terry challenged us with an acronyms and word meaning exercises from Word Buff – Quiz Book.


Quick write - your character picks up a hitch hiker on the way home from work.


Stories included an old a man and a dead tree, an artistic student, a young man with bad tooth, a minister who picks up a hitchhiker, how to get rid of a hitchhiker, a prostitute, a guide for hitchhikers, a hitchhiker in drag and taking home a hitchhiker.
