Writing from words of the day

After a five month break the writers enthusiastically grabbed the words of the day and wrote about - Links to the church, In front of the class, The police officer, Unstable family background and Hard to see.

Writing exercise Fran’s ideas - Gum branches and or storm damage

The writers read out their stories about; My koala, Driving in the USA, Learning from nature, A murder mystery, Rain was horizontal and The Gumnut story.

Shoalhaven writing group information

Winifred Sadlier from the Shoalhaven Writers Group phoned Pat last week.
Winifred wanted other groups to be aware and in contact with her group particularly during this time of isolation. They are sending in a monthly article on-line during the lockdown and are reading and commenting on each other’s work to keep in the mix during this isolation time.
Winifred has recently had her children’s book published on Amazon and is happy to come and talk us through the process once we are all meeting again.

Writing group Wednesday 5 February 2020


The first meeting for 2020 was a select event

Writing from words of the day

The writers grabbed the words of the day and wrote - I set up my easel, Always trying, On the train in Pakistan and my plan.

Exercise – an organ in the body

Pat gave us an excellent topic – write about an organ of the human body. We wrote about - Advice from the stomach, the skin in rap, the little kicking foot and the biggest organ goes to the spa.


Exercise - The phone rang

The writers were keen to share experiences of phones ringing and wrote about - In the court room, Will she pick it up, Drinking bubbly on the deck and In the meeting.

Writing group met Wednesday 6/11/19

Present were: Fran, Trev, Terry, Pat and Pauline so a good turnout. Helene could not come this month due to other commitments.

The future of homework/thought diaries

We discussed our homework/non-homework situation, not everyone was sure about thought diaries. However, one writer read out details which he said had helped him gain some perspective on a troublesome matter that had occurred recently. It was also discussed that the Thought Diary was not meant to be a deep and meaningful counselling type thing but rather thoughts that occurred to us randomly during the month.



Exercises

We did a short one word each 10 min write and read our pieces the words were Fold, Plankton, Mitigate, Dandelions and Manufacture. A bit of fun was had with these words and their juxta positioning….

We then wrote in the first person from the viewpoint of an inanimate object, which again was a bit of light hearted fun.

Christmas meeting

Christmas Meeting will be 1’ish at Pelicans on Wednesday 4th December. Arrive early if you want to spend some time writing, it will be lunch and catch up.

Fran bought in the book of short stories Candle in the dark. Pat and Fran then practiced their poetry writing skills

Fran also brought in an orange as a prop and the pair wrote about many orange things.



Pat brought in a Thought diary by an English author.

Homework

Write a thought dairy for a few days. Bring the diary for discussion and writing for the next meeting.

Jubilation – feeling of great happiness and triumph


Writing from words of the day

The group closed, Escape from the storm, The county fair, Performance cancelled, I saw the estuary, One of those days and Most days.


Exercise – Babushka dolls

The writers were inspired by the dolls and wrote about - Should have chosen her lover more carefully, In the box, What is that, Just take the doll, An excuse, At the airport and Riding the horse.


Exercise – the person in the sunglasses

The writers embraced the concept of sunglasses and wrote about - Hard to recognise, Above Collingwood beach, The greatest invention, John Lennon’s sunglasses, Not the local hospital, Rainbow sunglasses and Dark thoughts.

August 2019 update

Attendance numbers have dropped this year - resulting in fewer meetings being held.

As a result of the drop in numbers a few members have decided that from Wednesday 4 September 2019, meetings will be held monthly on the first Wednesday of the month.

Come to the Function room in the Vincentia Golf Club from 1 to 4 pm and bring a pen and paper or your electronic devise for writing.

The writers captured the words of the day and capered around as they wrote - I didn’t want to, My Dentist is not my mate, Poor little bee and In my garden.

The writers wrote about the advantages and disadvantages of the anti-anger virus - Everyone was nice, Chaos on a cruise ship, The ho-ho virus and Needing a snack.

Holidays and writing


PAT shared about her recent holiday; 23 days in China in an area of 10million people, polite but not much English. Amazing ancient buildings and broken pottery. 1,000 photos including toilets and lamp posts.


There was also writing about “Charles and gunfire and loving foxes”.


Jenny had written on a previous homework topic “We left early”.  It was very adventurous and action filled.
