RECORDS OF THE MEETING 6TH JULY 2016

Word of the Day

Peculium         -    Saving of a son/slave with the father's/owners permission
Procrastinate  -    Put off taking action
Platitude          -    Flat, dull or trite remark
Gentrified        -    Improve a neighbourhood  through gentrification
Sniglet             -    A word given to something as yet unnamed
Panderer          -    Person procuring a sexual partner for someone else
Predicament     -   Unpleasant or trying situation

From the reading of last week's homework came stories of pet deaths, bonfires, drug lords and killing off grandpa.  The mind boggles. 

Excercise for the day was the introduction of 'I used to pretend...'  This produced stories of space and Jupiter, bus conductors, geometry, church, having long legs and being able to fly.  The imagination really kicked in and some interesting tales evolved.

Writing from words of the day

The writers grabbed the words of the day and wrote; Di - A megalomaniac fooling everyone, Kris - Stories, Roslyn - A little old lady, Terry - I cant wait (a great poem), Wendy - The salesman, Helene - Too much advertising and Cath – Tried to impress.

Reading of homework

Four writers read out their homework as follows; Di – I remember the dark ages, Kris – In front of the fire, Terry – Houses of sticks and stone and Helene – the ages of winter.

Exercise

The writers chose a character and a location and wrote - Helene - A 12 year old girl in Edinburg, Wendy – a 42 year old movie actress, Terry - A beekeeper who take his bees on holiday, Roslyn – a 6 year old boy on a farm with a pig, Kris – 42 year old movie star who was treated like a princess and Di the youngest child of six children living in Rochester in England.

Dearth = shortage
Neophyte = new convert
Irradiate = shines light on
Plethora = excess, abundance
Stratum = a layer, a class in society, deposit in layer
Vernacular = dialect widely used, language, lingo
Paraprosdokian = figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence, phrase, or larger discourse is surprising or unexpected in a way that causes the reader or listener to reframe or reinterpret the first part

Writing from words of the day

The neophyte and the other writers used their plethora of talents to write stories and poems; Helene - The tradie, Cath - The company, Pauline – When retired, Kristyne – Colourful language, Diane – Not enlightened and Wendy – I was desperate.

Reading of homework

Four committed writers prepared the following homework - Helene – I love fun in winter, Wendy – a wonderful poem, Juan – On the way to the dunny and Pauline – Wild about words at Seechange.

The brave and hardy attending on the first day of Winter - Wendy, Juan, Helene, and Diane

Fuzzy – hazy, blurry, indistinct
Crestfallen – dejected
Introvert – looking inwards
Balderdash – senseless talk or writing nonsense

Writing from words of the day

The hardy writers grabbed the words of the day and created the following - Helene - Computer users, Diane - Not part of the human race, Juan - I tend to forget and Wendy - After a flagon of wine.

Reading of homework

The dedicated writers read out the following homework - Helene – In the dirt, Wendy – limerick Plain Jane, Juan – A nice gift in 1786 and Winter time; and Diane – I’d jump about.

Exercise - Dementia

We used the letters of the word Dementia to start sentences to write a short story or poem. Helene – Mickey Mouse Club, Juan – Absolute garbage, Diane – Terrorism and Wendy – Eat your vegetables.

The elite group of five writers took the words of the day and pugnaciously created the following stories – Wet or dry – Helene, Status Quo – Cath, I woke at 6 am – Juan, Government debate – Diane and  Dressed as a clown – Wendy.

Reading of homework

Four writers read out wonderful homework -
 Helene – My male ancestors, Wendy – I wish I was a woman from the male perspective, Diane – How many mistakes 
and Juan – A newly made mother.



Exercise

We took the phrase “I can’t put my finger on it” and wrote

Helene – My finger went red, Wendy – pimple on my spine, Diane – A dream, Juan – Who cares and Cath – the word wont come.
